Sky’s decision to commission Arup Associates produced Europe’s most sustainable broadcasting studio complex. Sky Studios contains eight broadcast studios on its lower levels, offices for nearly 1400 staff, and data rooms for 400 plus computer servers.

The project pioneered naturally ventilated recording studios during broadcasting, featuring tall chimneys to drive an innovatiove stack ventilation system. A 5MW biomass fuelled power, heat and cooling CHP plant provides a significant portion of the energy demand of the site with low Carbon emissions. A very visible element in the environmental strategy for the project was the construction of a 56m high wind turbine capable of generating 100kW of power. The turbine is a strikingly structural bespoke design, clad in perforated aluminium.
